Quick History of Tampa Breweries

Tampa downtown

The long history of commercial brewing in Tampa can be traced back to a man named Vicente Ybor, who founded the first commercial brewery in Florida in 1897 called the Florida Brewing Company (real original).

During its prime, the Florida Brewing Company was exporting tons of beer from Cuba, storing 10,000 barrels of beer each year, and transporting beer all over the United States.

In 1920, as it did to most breweries in the country, Prohibition took a toll on the Florida Brewing Company.

However, some of the breweries in Tampa did manage to stay open during Prohibition, and now, just in the past decade, the craft beer scene has been thriving in Tampa with new breweries popping up all the time.

The Best Breweries in Tampa (Ranked)

Rather than trying to explain our pretty strong views on what makes a brewery the best, we’ve designed our own formula to objectively tell you what’s literally the best.

We’ve devised our own ranking system based on 3 factors:

  1. Public ratings (sites such as Google, Facebook and Yelp)
  2. The brewery’s rating on Untappd
  3. Popularity

The middle two rankings showcase how loved they are while our personal opinion also plays into the overall ranking.

In the end, each brewery receives a score out of 5 – but a brewery can score higher than five based on their Untappd rating and how popular it is. We will break ties using the total number of reviews. In general, the higher the score, the better!

Here is our ranked list of which breweries offers the best craft beers in Tampa:

Breweries in Tampa

1. 7venth Sun Brewery

  • Hours:
    • Monday – Wednesday: 5:00pm – 10:00pm
    • Thursday & Friday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
    • Saturday: 12:00pm – 11:00pm
    • Sunday: 12:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Food Available: Yes via food trucks

Up first on the best breweries in Tampa, 7venth Sun Brewery was started by a woman named Devon Brooks, who has quite the beer pedigree. She graduated from Oregon State University (a state that knows a thing or two about craft beer) with a degree in Fermentation Science (just saying, our school days would have been so much different if we knew this was a thing).

After graduating, she brewed in Anheuser-Busch’s pilot facility before moving into craft beer at Atlanta’s SweetWater Brewing.

Armed with all of this knowledge and experience, she decided it was time to open her own brewery, 7venth Sun Brewery, in Tampa in 2012.

7venth Sun’s taproom is large, open, and airy with plenty of seating, both inside and outside, for small and large groups. Plus, 7venth Sun offers games and events frequently, like trivia nights and markets.

Food isn’t offered, but there are food trucks that come by often. 7venth Sun might be one of the coolest breweries in Tampa!

Out of all the Tampa Bay breweries, 7venth Sun has one of the biggest beer selections. Because of this, we recommend a flight for your first time. Some of their best beers include “The Ultimate Brew” IPA and the “Headbanger” IPA.

2. Angry Chair Brewing

breweries in tampa - angry chair
  • Hours:
    • Monday – Thursday: 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm
    • Friday & Satuday: 11:00 am – 11:00 pm
    • Sunday: 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Food Available: Yes, full kitchen

Like many brewery stories, Angry Chair began when a Tampa native started brewing from home in 2006 and working for a brewery in 2009. During that time, he made a Tiramisu beer and people went crazy over it.

That’s when he got the “dessert in beer” idea and he opened Angry Chair Brewing in 2012.

Since then, Angry Chair Brewing has made unique darker beers like German Chocolate Cupcake, Fudge Bucket, and French Toast.

Now, many of their beers have won awards and people come from all over to check out the brewery.

Inside the taproom, you won’t only enjoy the beer but the atmosphere as well. The taproom features eclectic decor, two TVs, music, art, and more. Angry Chair Brewing doesn’t offer food, but, they have a list of places that deliver. Pets are allowed as well!

While Angry Chair brewing might be known for its stouts, they offer plenty of other flavors like sour, coffee, fruity, and more. A couple of their most famous beers include the “Space Grass” IPA and the “Fionn” porter.

We personally love Angry Chair and they are one of our favorites in the Tampa Bay area for excellent craft beer.

3. Cigar City Brewing

breweries in tampa - cigar city
  • Hours:
    • Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
    • Friday & Saturday: 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.
    • Sunday: 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Food Available: Yes, permanent food truck

Cigar City Brewing all started when Joey Redner wanted to bring the culture of his hometown Tampa to the rest of the world in the form of great craft beer.

In 2008, Joey opened his first location on Spruce Street and started working with a brewmaster.

Many years later, Cigar City is an award-winning brewery and is one of the most well-known Tampa breweries, both in the area and across the country (distributed to more than 40 states).

Cigar City Brewing focuses on making high-quality beer with the best ingredients, and each beer is analyzed and taste-tested by experienced individuals so you can be sure that you’re getting the best beer possible.

Inside the taproom, you can find 24 varieties of beer as well as food that is specifically made to go with the beers.

You can even take a tour of the brewery if you’d like – to date, this has been one of our favorite brewery tours that we’ve done!

Cigar City Brewing offers a wide variety of beers in their taproom – one of their most popular beers is the “Jai Alai” IPA, which is just about as classic of an IPA as you can find.

But, there are plenty more beers with various flavors like the special release Hunaphu’s Imperial stout with cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs, and chile peppers.

This highly sought-after stout is released in March each year and is very hard to get your hands (and lips) on.

4. Garagiste Meadery

  • Hours:
    • Thursday: 3 PM-9 PM
    • Friday: 12 PM-10 PM
    • Saturday: 12 PM-10 PM
    • Sunday: 12 PM-7 PM
    • Monday – Wednesday: Closed
  • Food Available: No, but you can bring your own food

Garagiste Meadery started from another homebrewer who was focused on using mostly locally-produced ingredients. Friends and family started trying the homemade meads and they started growing in popularity.

Eventually, local festivals were inviting the founder to bring his meads.

Next thing you know, the owners risked a jump into the deep end and brought Garagiste Meadery to life in 2016.

Garagiste Meadery features a simple and relaxed taproom with a wooden bar, tables, and chairs, and a “barrel” theme. There are also TVs throughout the space.

While Garagiste Meadery doesn’t serve food, there are many restaurants nearby that you can order from, or you can bring your own!

You can enjoy your food and drinks either inside or outside on the dog-friendly patio.

Garagiste Meadery is one of the only Tampa Bay Breweries that produces mead, and it’s very good mead too!

Some of the best award-winning meads include “Reboog Vitis”, “Susy’s Cherry Pie”, “Black Widow”, and much more.

The tap list is always changing, but you can be sure to enjoy a wide variety of fresh and flavorful mead, no matter what time you visit.

5. Coppertail Brewing

breweries in tampa - coppertail
  • Hours:
    • Mon – Thurs: 11:00am – 11:00pm
    • Fri & Sat: 11:00am – 12:00am
    • Sun: 11:00am – 9:00pm
  • Food Available: Yes, food kitchen

Having traveled around the US and dreaming about opening a brewery, two friends finally decided to return home to Florida and make that dream a reality. In 2014, Coppertail Brewing was born.

Where does the name Coppertail come from? One of the founder’s 5-year old daughter, of course.

Legend has it that Coppertail is a sea monster that lives in Tampa Bay, but came to symbolize dreaming of the impossible (like the craft brewing industry going up and succeeding against the giant mega-brewers).

The Ybor tap room has a “warehouse-y” and trendy feel to it with exposed brick, plenty of artwork, and relics from the past, like the reclaimed wood bar.

There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, and there are even performances outside sometimes.

Another great thing about Coppertail Brewing is that they offer food! The menu includes things like tacos, wings, loaded waffle fries, pizza, and much more.

Coppertail Brewing offers an extensive beer menu that includes crowd favorites like the “Free Dive” IPA and the “Unholy” Belgian Tripel. A wine menu is available as well.

6. Bastet Brewing

  • Hours:
    • Thursday 2 PM – 9 PM
    • Friday 2 PM – 10 PM
    • Saturday 11 AM – 10 PM
    • Sunday 11 AM – 7 PM
    • Monday – Wednesday: closed
  • Food Available: Yes via food trucks

Bastet Brewing was created by two beer-thirsty people that met while working at a law firm – hey, lawyers are human and like beer!

After spending time in a homebrewing club and working at another brewery, the duo worked hard (built the bar by hand and hung up their own artwork) to open their own Bastet Brewing.

The brewery started as a small tasting room but now they have more than 20 beers of their own, and way more are on their way.

Bastet Brewing is one of the most unique breweries in Tampa because they offer beers from all around the world and they focus on fresh and local ingredients.

The name has a unique backstory, too. “Bastet” was an Egyptian cat goddess who symbolized both gentleness and ferocity.

The story goes that Bastet wanted to seek revenge on humanity, but she accidentally got too drunk on beer and slept for days instead! Same, Bastet, same.

Bastet Brewing doesn’t only offer great beer, but a great atmosphere as well. The space is light and casual, and you’re surrounded by ancient Egyptian decor and one of the founder’s very own artwork.

Beer styles from all around the world include the Mexican tepaché and the African millet. However, the brewery has plenty of unique beers of its own.

One of the most popular beers they offer is the “ArchaelogicAle”, which tastes like almonds, honey, and dates.

Another tasty beer is the “Don’t Be Hitting My Switches” IPA which is the perfect balance of citrus and hops.

7. Woven Water Brewing Company

breweries in tampa - woven water
  • Hours:
    • Monday – Thursday: 2 PM – 10 PM
    • Friday & Saturday: 12 PM – 10 PM
    • Sunday: 12 PM – 8 PM
  • Food Available: Yes via food trucks or burger place next door

Woven Water Brewing Company was founded by two couples with a passion for beer. For a while, they were unsure of where they would set up shop with an actual brewery until they came across an old storefront in Tampa Heights that fit the bill.

The couples renovated the space and Woven Water Brewing officially opened in 2020.

The interior of the brewery has a chic and industrial vibe to it with a black and white color scheme with some splashes of color throughout, including plants, decor, and artwork.

As far as entertainment, there are large TVs, music, and frequent events. They’re dog-friendly too!

Woven Water Brewing is mostly known for its sweet and fun beers like “Emulsified Lollipop” and “Peach Orange Cream Pop Electric Fusion.”

Many of their drinks have a thick consistency and taste just like a fruit smoothie!

However, if sweet and fruity isn’t your thing, don’t worry! They have a wide variety of other beers as well.

8. Magnanimous Brewing

  • Hours: Daily from 12 pm-10 pm
  • Food Available: No

After many years of volunteering and working in and around the brewery industry, the two founders finally decided it was time to open their own brewery.

Enter Magnanimous Brewing. The owners are passionate about Florida and opened Magnanimous with the idea of using ingredients from local farms.

They even said that they want to “tell the story of Florida in a beer.”

Another inspiration behind Magnanimous brewing comes from the word “Magnanimous” itself, which means to be generous and kind.

The duo opened the brewery with the idea of keeping their workers and the community happy and being one of the kindest and most generous breweries in Tampa.

Mission accomplished.

Magnanimous Brewing offers a chill and relaxing vibe with modern artwork and numerous TVs on the walls.

It’s spacious, nicely decorated, and the perfect place to just chat and enjoy some beers with friends. Another plus about the brewery is that they offer coffee and tea in the mornings and afternoons!

Magnanimous Brewing has plenty of fun beers to choose from on their tap list. A popular beer is the Juice Lord IPA, which has a citrus and fruit taste.

However, there are plenty more beers with various flavors and from all different styles.

9. Tampa Bay Brewing Co

  • Hours: Daily from 11am-10pm
  • Food Available: Yes, full kitchen

Tampa Bay Brewing Co is one of the oldest craft breweries in Tampa as it was first opened in 1995 as a homebrew supply store.

Years down the line, the original founders’ sons took over and it eventually became the Tampa Bay Brewing Co (TBBC) that we know today.

TBBC is still family-owned and doing better than ever!

Tampa Bay Brewing Co is located inside a spacious building that includes a brewhouse, 24 taps, and a complete kitchen that serves amazing bar food like burgers, pizzas, soups, salads, desserts, and much more.

TBBC also has an outdoor patio, where you can enjoy music on most Fridays.

A great thing about Tampa Bay Brewing Co is their large beer selection. Some of their most popular beers include the widely-available “Reef Donkey”, which has a fruity flavor, as well as “Old Elephant Foot” IPA, which has citrus flavors.

10. Cigar City Cider & Mead

  • Hours:
    • Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 5pm-12am
    • Saturday: 12pm-12am
    • Sunday: 12pm-12am
    • Monday & Tuesday: Closed
  • Food Available: No

Cigar City & Mead was started by a group of people extremely passionate about cider and mead, including many members of the leadership team at Cigar City Brewing.

The men decided to get together and purchase a building in Ybor City that used to be a police stable, a barber shop, and a tailor shop until it was transformed into Cigar City Cider & Mead in 2014.

Cigar City Cider & Mead offers a calm and casual vibe with exposed brick, tables made from old barrels, and large windows overlooking the busy Ybor streets.

You can enjoy your drinks inside or outside on the patio and, if you’re feeling bored, you can enjoy some of their board games!

Cigar City Cider & Mead, of course, has a variety of cider and mead with “Homemade Apple Pie” and “Hard Cider” being some of the most popular ciders.

They also offer a guest beer menu from many local breweries.

11. Southern Brewing & Winery

    • Saturday: 11AM – 11 PM

Southern Brewing was created by owners Kelly and Brian who both have always had a love for beer – they met back in the 90’s at a beer festival.

Brian worked at a few different breweries throughout the years but eventually got the idea to open his own wholesale distribution company, which he named Southern Brewing Supply. The business grew and eventually became the popular brewery and winery that it is today.

Southern Brewing is now a thriving hangout spot for both tourists and locals as it offers plenty of beer, wine, entertainment, and more.

A nice thing about Southern Brewing is that you have the choice to sit inside the tap room, which offers entertainment like music and trivia, or you can sit outside in the relaxing garden, where you can sip your beer next to the water fountains – not the drinking kind ;).  Southern Brewing doesn’t offer food, but there are plenty of food trucks that frequently swing by.

Bonus: if you’re into homebrewing or winemaking, this is your spot as it’s also a homebrew and winemaking supply store to stock up on all of your supplies. They even have brewing classes to master your craft!

Southern Brewing offers about 40 taps of beer as well as wine, cider, coffee, and more.

One popular beer that we would recommend is the Westside IPA, which is a unique mix of citrus, pine, and floral flavors.

The tap list is always rotating to keep things fresh and exciting and most of the products are made in-house (there are a few guest taps available).

12. Zydeco Brew Werks

  • Hours:
    • Friday & Saturday: 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Sunday & Tuesaday, Wednesday, Thursday: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM
    • Monday: Closed
  • Food Available: Yes

Looking for a taste of New Orleans while you’re in Tampa (and who isn’t)? Look no further than Zydeco Brew Werks which was started by two friends in 2018.

Zydeco Brew Werks sits in a large multi-story building that holds ten barrels and can seat even the largest groups.

As mentioned, Zydeco Brew Werks has a NOLA-inspired menu which includes things like gumbo, shrimp n’ grits, po’boy sandwiches, and much more. There’s also a wine and cocktail menu which includes the famous Sazerac Cocktail.

Zydeco Brew Werks prides itself on being a brewery first and they have a fairly large tap list that includes popular beers like the “Pablo” IPA, the “Savage” golden ale, and the “Ybor Premium” lager.

13. Hidden Springs Ale Works

breweries in tampa - hidden springs
  • Hours:
    • Monday & Tuesday: 2PM – 8PM
    • Wednesday & Thursday : 3PM – 9PM
    • Friday & Saturday: 12PM – 10PM
    • Sunday : 12PM – 6PM
  • Food Available: No

Hidden Springs Ale Works was created in 2015 when two friends decided to open their own brewery after having been homebrewers.

The founders are Florida natives and spent their childhoods playing in springs, so that’s where they came up with the name “Hidden Springs Ale Works.”

Inside, the brewery has an industrial vibe with TVs and artwork on the walls. Plus, you can buy most of the artwork as a print if you’d like! The service is excellent and you can also buy cans of beer to take home with you.

An impressive thing about Hidden Springs Ale Works is the large selection of beers which includes sours, lagers, and much more. Many of the beers are “dessert themed” and include unique flavors like Rice Crispy Treat and Peanut Butter Cup.

However, some of the most popular beers have more of a fruity taste, like the ZFG pale ale which has 0 IBU’s and the Bear Lasers IPA.

14. Rock Brothers Brewing

  • Hours:
    • Wednesday & Thursday: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM
    • Friday: 4:00 PM – 2:00 AM
    • Saturday: 1:00 PM – 2:00 AM
    • Sunday: 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Food Available: No

The idea for Rock Brothers first started with Tampa-native Kevin Lilly in 2006.

When craft beer was increasing in popularity in the 2010s, Kevin started to seriously consider opening his own brewery. In 2014, before his first beer had even hit any tap lines, it had won a National Championship award at the United States Beer Tasting Championship (with the help of Cigar City Brewing).

Since Rock Brothers opened, it has partnered with many famous bands like Hootie and the Blowfish, 311, and more.

As its name suggests, Rock Brothers Brewing differs from other Tampa breweries in that it combines music with beer in the hopes of combining the beer and music industries, and bringing the community closer together.

Once you walk into Rock Brothers, you’ll feel right at home due to the cozy and casual atmosphere with brick walls, calm lighting, and music-themed décor that fills the space.

You can also head upstairs to enjoy live performances by local bands.

Rock Brothers offers a variety of their own beers as well as local beers. Some of their most popular beers are “Nare Sugar Brown”, which has a sweet vanilla flavor, and “High Road Ale”, which has more of a citrus orange flavor. Rock Brothers doesn’t just stop at beer, either!

They also offer a full bar, which is a unique thing for the breweries in Tampa.

If you are upset that Rock Brothers has come in last on the best breweries in Tampa list, then go to Google, Yelp or Facebook and them them a good review!

While this list only scratches the surface, you can see that there is an amazing collection of the best breweries in Tampa; each one offering a unique style and atmosphere, ranging from casual to elegant.

Many of these breweries are locally-owned and use locally/regionally-sourced ingredients as well, so you are not only enjoying delicious beer but also helping the Tampa community.

We hope that this list has helped you narrow down the top Tampa Bay breweries that you would like to visit on your next trip!
