Breweries in El Chalten, Argentina: Best Places to Drink Local Beer

fter hiking all day in El Chaltén, there’s no better way to unwind than with a cold, local craft beer – preferably with a mountain view and your hiking boots still covered in dust. Whether you’ve just conquered Mount Fitz Roy or strolled along Cerro Torre, you’ll find plenty of small breweries in town pouring Patagonian-style pints that taste even better after a long trek.

What makes El Chaltén’s breweries so fun is how local everything feels. Most restaurants and bars here brew their own beer or share taps with neighbors – literally rolling kegs down the street when one runs out. It’s laid-back, community-driven, and full of character… just like the town itself.

We spent our last afternoon in El Chaltén brewery-hopping after finishing the Cerro Torre hike, chasing happy hours and hiding from the fast-moving Patagonian wind. If you’re visiting soon, here are a few great spots to sip your way through town.

Short on Time? Here Are the Key Takeaways:

  • El Chaltén has a surprisingly vibrant craft beer scene, and most bars brew their own or share kegs with nearby spots.
  • Top places to visit include La Cervecería, Bourbon Smokehouse, Don Guerra, and La Nieve (known for its tacos and local beer).
  • Expect great happy hour deals and locally brewed styles like pilsner, red ale, and dark ale, perfect for relaxing after a hike.
  • Everything in town is walkable, making it easy to create your own brewery crawl after hiking Fitz Roy or Cerro Torre.
  • Don’t miss trying mate, Argentina’s national drink, at a local café like Mathilda.

La Cervecería El Chaltén

If you only visit one brewery in town, make it La Cervecería (literally, “The Brewery”). Set inside a cozy log cabin with mountain views, this spot is the perfect mix of rustic charm and good beer.

They usually have three house brews on tap – a pilsner, bock, and weissbier – plus light snacks like popcorn to hold you over until dinner. The patio outside is great for warm days, but inside feels like a mountain lodge straight out of a Patagonia postcard.

Pro Tip: Come early to grab a seat by the window before the post-hike crowd rolls in.

Bourbon Smokehouse

Part smokehouse, part bar, Bourbon Smokehouse feels like the social hub for hikers staying at nearby hostels. The large windows offer sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, and they serve both local beer and cocktails – perfect if your hiking buddy isn’t into beer.

Happy hour here runs late, and the vibe is casual and upbeat. It’s the kind of place where you might meet people you just passed on the trail a few hours earlier.

We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time, so moving on…

Don Guerra Cervecería

A quick stop on our walk back from the Fitz Roy trailhead, Don Guerra Cervecería has a friendly, no-frills atmosphere. On tap you’ll usually find a lager, dark ale, red ale, and a local cider. Nothing overly fancy, but it’s cold, refreshing, and hits the spot after a long day outdoors.

It’s conveniently located next to a waffle shop, so if you’re craving something sweet with your pint, you know where to go.

La Nieve – Tacos & Beer

Okay, technically not a brewery… but when the tacos are this good, it deserves an honorable mention. La Nieve, right next to the Chaltén Suites Hotel, serves up made-to-order tacos paired with local beer – including a fantastic red ale from Cervecería Andes.

We’re not exaggerating when we say these tacos landed in our Top 10 “Most Epicly Delicious Tacos Ever Eaten” list. Grab a plate, crack open a cold one, and thank us later.

Other Breweries in El Chaltén Worth Visiting

We only had three nights in town (and really wish we’d stayed longer), but there are several other spots to add to your El Chaltén brewery crawl:

  • La Vinería: Cozy wine and beer bar perfect for a quieter night.
  • B&B Beers & Burgers: The name says it all — great for hearty food and local pints.
  • Cervecería Patagonia: The iconic Patagonian beer brand has a few taps around town.

With happy hours everywhere and half the town brewing their own beer, it’s easy to turn a hiking trip into a beer-tasting adventure.

Bonus Sip: Try Argentina’s National Drink, Mate

While you’re in Argentina, you have to try mate (pronounced mah-tay). It’s not alcoholic, but it’s a cultural staple. We had ours at Mathilda, a cozy café on San Martín, but you’ll see locals sipping it everywhere — from park benches to bus stops.

Mate is made by pouring hot water over yerba mate leaves and sipping through a metal straw called a bombilla. Just be careful not to burn your mouth (Sam learned this the hard way 😅).

Final Thoughts on El Chaltén’s Breweries

Between the rugged hikes, wild weather, and mountain views, El Chaltén is one of those places that feels both remote and welcoming at the same time. And its small but mighty craft beer scene is the perfect reflection of that.

Whether you’re brewery-hopping like we did or just rewarding yourself after a long hike, you’ll find plenty of local beer, friendly faces, and great stories in every pint.
